National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise (NICRE)

Support for rural businesses and communities

We put knowledge to work for an enterprising countryside… combining research with practical innovation to find new ways of unlocking potential and supporting thriving rural businesses and communities including through our free to use innovation portals.

Rural Enterprise Hubs

Rural Enterprise Hubs (REHs) are mechanisms for bringing together rural businesses. The co-location of businesses drives innovation through knowledge exchange, where face-to-face contact still matters. They provide additional opportunities to network, acquire knowledge, form new collaborations, and create synergies between tenants.

Resilience toolkit

Research carried out by the Enterprise Research Centre, one of NICRE’s founding university partners, shows that small and medium-sized business leaders often struggle to find time to think about future risks and to plan for them. As a consequence, many are unprepared for a crisis when it hits. Yet we know that firms that do engage in crisis planning are more likely to bounce back from adversity stronger than they were before. Our toolkit encourages leaders to think about the strengths and weaknesses of their businesses and helps them to identify their greatest potential future risks. It also makes crisis planning quick and easy.
