Innovation event is not to be missed

Published: October 18th, 2023

A special event will bring together a host of experts to showcase the range of specialist support and funding available to help businesses innovate and grow.

The November 8 event at the University Centre Shrewsbury will examine just what forms innovation can take in a business – and includes a workshop so you will leave with your own innovation diagnostic action plan.

It is being organised by the Marches Growth Hub – the region’s leading business support service – with support from Innovate UK, Innovate UK Edge and partners.

A Marches Growth Hub spokesman said: “This event will have something for everyone to help them learn about the help available for businesses to innovate and grow.

“Innovation is the lifeblood of successful businesses and the event brings together experts to showcase the range of specialist support and funding available.”

The event starts at 9am with coffee and pastries before Mark Schneider, head of business development and delivery at the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership, officially welcomes guests.

Experts from Innovate UK and Innovate UK Edge will stage the first session, looking at innovation in the real world and how many companies are already innovating without necessarily realising it.

This session will look at what innovation is, how it can be harnessed in order to grow and will touch on some of the support available to innovating and growing businesses through Innovate UK and from the national team of specialists in Innovate UK Edge. The session will also allow people to hear from directly from some of the innovative companies Innovate UK Edge has worked with.

The day’s second session will look at how Knowledge Transfer Partnership funding can help you grow your business.

This session, led by Maud Duthie, programme manager, University of Chester and Paul Cihlar, head of commercialisation, The University of Salford, will explain what a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is, how you can benefit from this funding and get some practical examples of how KTPs work.

After a coffee break, Hugh Dennis from Reclaim Tax UK, will provide information and examples of how businesses can benefit from R&D tax credits. Hugh is one of the regional development directors at Reclaim Tax covering the West Midlands region and works with companies to access pre and post-innovation funding to help turn their ideas into successful projects.

Finally, an hour-long Innovation Canvas Workshop will get under way at 11.50am to provide a simple and fast innovation diagnostic. The session will lead you through the diagnostic process and you will take away with you your own diagnostic which will help:

  • Identify and overcome important challenges
  • Spot gaps in your capacity to innovate
  • Test assumptions that may be hindering progress
  • Clarify areas of risk and uncertainty
  • Invite and secure team buy-in
  • Improve the likelihood of success.

The session will be led by Malcolm Harold, scale up director, Innovate UK EDGE.
