About

Established in 1976, The Bond Retail Services Group is a highly successful commercial refrigeration company with three regional centres, including a base in Halesfield, Telford. The company, which serves UK and Europe, employs 200 people and makes refrigeration cabinets for major supermarkets including Asda, Iceland and Waitrose.

The company custom engineers storage solutions for its clients, working meticulously from the design stages through to production, assembling everything under one roof, using the most up-to-date technologies and diligently testing products. Since 2014, the company has re-manufactured in excess of 10,000 cabinets.

The business challenge

Already an established leader in refrigeration for supermarkets, the company was keen to develop its Telford site to increase capacity so it could not only create new cabinets for clients, but also focus on incorporating refurbished goods to its existing market.

In addition, the company also hires out refrigeration cabinets to clients and was looking for support to keep track of company assets when out on hire.

How the Marches Growth Hub helped

Bond Group was assisted with a grant application to the Green Shoots fund. A University of Wolverhampton managed project supported with EU funding, Green Shoots, (which closed to new applications in 2015), supported businesses in a variety of sectors looking to invest capital to create jobs and growth.

The grant funded the creation of a new mezzanine floor, racking, kitchen and toilet facilities at the company’s Halesfield site.

Harish Chandler, New Cabinet Division Director from the company, said: “We invested the funding in two mezzanine floors and supporting services which allowed us to expand our manufacturing offer to incorporate refurbished goods as well as new cabinets. As a direct result we created and filled four new posts.”

The team at the Marches Growth Hub also signposted the company to support from Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), the world’s leading research and education group, designing solutions and overcoming challenges through collaborative R&D and world class education. WMG worked with the company on how they could track chiller units out on hire to the retail sector. They developed an app which uses bar coding technology to monitor equipment.
