The Great British High Street is fighting back.
It’s fair to say it’s been something of a tough time for the retailers who make up the majority of our town centres, as the combined threats of austerity, the internet and the dreaded B-word put the squeeze on shoppers.
But there’s still plenty to be optimistic about on our high streets – and lots to celebrate. And we can all help. The Great British High Street Awards are back and offer a fantastic opportunity to ensure some of this region’s brilliant high streets are given the recognition they deserve.
There are two categories meaning every one of our high streets across the Marches has a chance of success.
The cream of the crop will be honoured with the Champion High Street award – given to the UK’s best high streets with exceptionally strong local communities who are leading the way.
These high streets will be providing exemplary customer experience, be successfully transforming for the future through new technologies and digital connectivity, have excellent sustainability and environment programmes, and revolutionary innovative initiatives demonstrating fresh thinking and challenging convention.
Up and coming communities can enter the Rising Star High Street award. These aim to recognise those communities which are overcoming challenges to evolve into a strong high street.
To apply, you’ll need to be a representative of a Business Improvement District, local authority, parish council, town team or partnership, chamber of commerce, community interest company or group of five or more independent businesses.
But even if you’re not, you can still ask these groups to put in an application if they are not already doing so.
