Event to shine a light on construction industry skills

The Hub News Team | 17.10.16

Shropshire businesses and educators working in the construction sector are being invited to a special breakfast event that will focus on how to boost skills and training in the industry.

The session, supported by Shropshire Constructing Excellence, on October 21 will highlight the resources available for construction skills in the region, the Construction Industry Training Board levy, Apprenticeship levy and the new Degree Apprenticeship in Construction Management.

Hosted by Enterprise Telford at the Marches Growth Hub Telford & Wrekin at the University of Wolverhampton's Priorslee campus, the event will run from 7.30am to 9.30am. It includes breakfast and networking as well as three talks from industry experts and a chance to tap into their knowledge through a question and answer session.

Chairman of Shropshire Constructing Excellence, Gareth Emberton, said the event would benefit owners and managers of construction sector businesses and those in the supply chain.

He said: "We are all aware of the huge skills gap which exists in the UK in our sector and the need to find ways of tackling the issue. This event will showcase demonstrate how employers and training providers are working together to address this, and also give businesses vital information on the new Apprenticeship Levy."

Declan McDonnell, of training specialist CADCOE , will give his perspective on why the industry needs to be working together to meet the demand for skills and the challenges his own business is facing.

Lorraine Gregory from the Construction Industry Training Board, will examine the construction challenges facing the UK and the West Midlands and discuss the CITB Levy and the Apprenticeship Levy and how it will work in 2017.

The University of Wolverhampton's new Apprentice Hub will be the focus of a session with Michelle Roberts. She will share information on the Degree Apprenticeship route and how businesses can use levy funds to support this programme, with a focus on the Construction Management Degree Apprenticeship.
