Organisations across Shropshire and Herefordshire that are exploring ways to reduce, reuse or recycle plastic packaging are being urged to apply for slice of more than £37m of funding to develop sustainable alternatives.

Innovate UK, part of UK Research and Innovation, is offering up to £37 million from the fund to invest in demonstrators and early-stage projects to make the UK a leader in smart and sustainable plastic packaging.

It is part of the Government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund Smart Sustainable Plastic Packaging Challenge that aims to position the UK as a leading innovator in smart and sustainable plastic packaging that will dramatically reduce the volume of plastic entering the environment by 2025.

There are three different competitions open for funding for early-stage projects, demonstrators and feasibility studies for demonstrators. Projects should work across at least one or more themes including materials innovation, design innovation, technology or process innovation or business model innovation.

XXX, from the Marches Growth Hub, said: "Tackling the problem of plastic waste is a key global and national priority. More than 80 million tonnes is produced each year with a portion of that ending up in our oceans and polluting the environment, with the annual output expected to triple by 2050.

"This funding will enable organisations that are developing sustainable plastic packaging or exploring innovative ways to address issues around plastic waste develop their ideas with the potential to make a real difference to this growing problem."

The deadline for applications for demonstrators and feasibility studies for demonstrators is February 19 and April 1 for early-stage projects. For more information on how to apply, visit www.gov.uk/government/news/developing-sustainable-plastic-packaging-apply-for-funding.
