The Midlands Engine are bringing together DIT Africa, UKEF and nine major contractors with projects across Egypt, Ghana, Uganda and elsewhere seeking new UK suppliers.
Africa is home to 5 of the world’s 10 fastest-growing economies and despite COVID, this trend is set to continue. With government support, UK construction and infrastructure firms exported more by value to Africa than to any other global region in 2019-20. In the current financial year Midlands exporters account for 64% of the £811m of export wins recorded by UK firms so far.
The UK has negotiated four trade continuity agreements covering eleven African countries in the African Continental Free Trade Area, representing almost 44% of UK trade with the continent and worth billions of pounds to each economy with more close to completion.
UK Export Finance (UKEF), the government’s export credit agency, has supported African and UK businesses with record sums to unlock major infrastructure projects. Part of those deals is often that prime contractors must bring UK suppliers into their project supply chains.
