Support from DIT key to success of China deal for Grainger & Worrall

Expert support from DIT has played a key role in Bridgnorth engineering firm Grainger & Worrall winning an £8 million contract in China.

Charlie Bamber, Executive Manager for Applied Technologies at Grainger & Worrall, says DIT has been a huge assistance over the past five years as initial contacts translated into the big business win. “We had the team at DIT to lean on and the credibility their support provides when dealing with one of the largest companies in China. It was a real ‘David and Goliath’ situation but the DIT team and our Embassy staff in China provided invaluable assistance, attending meetings to demonstrate the support of the UK government.”

Among the services accessed by Grainger & Worrall was an Intellectual Property Audit, allowing the company to identify its IP and any potential threats. DIT’s Export Joint Control Unit arranged meetings to help the company understand whether or not an export licence was required for the project and a China Cultural Workshop training session was held for 16 staff to prepare for China market entry.

“Our International Trade Adviser, Shernel Stevenson has been in constant contact through this process, even helping us put together an event at a Shropshire manor house to introduce our Chinese partners to potential UK suppliers – just one example of the huge value provided by DIT in permitting UK companies to punch above their weight. “Along with cultural training and signposting offered by DIT as we move onward, this has been invaluable in helping us develop a commercial relationship that is now accelerating exponentially.”
