The Government has confirmed a six-month delay to the introduction of import border controls.

Officials say the move will help businesses recovering in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The move means that a ban on imports of specific products of animal origin, subject to prohibitions and restrictions, will now come into effect on October 1 2021 rather than next month.

Prohibitions and restrictions (P&R) are trade requirements that apply to certain commodities as of January 1 2021 and prevent or restrict the export and import of certain goods where there is a risk to animal, plant or public health.

Cabinet Office Minister Lord Frost of Allenton said: “We will now introduce border controls broadly six months later than planned to give traders time to focus on getting back on their feet as the economy opens up after a difficult year.

“We are confident that this new timetable will allow import businesses to re-establish their trading arrangements after a difficult period due to coronavirus, in the most straightforward and lightest touch way possible.

“We will continue to give businesses the support they need to trade effectively with the EU, including through export helplines, webinars with experts and support via our network of 300 international trade advisers.”

Information about goods affected by P&R and guidance on the export of food, agricultural produce and on composite products is available on GOV.UK. Information on imports affected will also be available soon.
