A new campaign to encourage people to shop locally has been launched to coincide with Small Business Saturday and the run-up to Christmas.
GCS Local – a cross-Government campaigns team – says its Search Local Shop Local initiative will highlight the great work of local businesses across the Midlands.
It is also urging businesses to register with the Small Business Saturday website and local directories to further help boost trade.
A spokesperson said: "Here at GCS Local we recognise that encouraging residents to shop locally is a key priority over the festive period. As such, we’re launching our own Search Local Shop Local campaign.
"In order to encourage shoppers in the Midlands to shop online with local retailers and, after national restrictions end, visit their local high street in person, we will be using our social media channels to highlight the great work of local businesses across the region.
"As part of this activity, we will be encouraging shoppers to use the Small Business Saturday small business finder tool https://bit.ly/FindLocalMids to find local retailers operating online or via click-and-collect. We will also be encouraging local businesses to sign-up for this free service."
Small Business Saturday will be celebrated across the country on December 5 this year with independent retailers forming the focus of the national campaign.
Now in its eighth year in the UK, the campaign has grown significantly each year with an estimated £800m spent in small businesses across the UK on 2019’s Small Business Saturday, with a record turnout of 17.6 million people choosing to shop small on the day.
American Express continues to be the principal supporter of the UK campaign through this success.
