Help your high street thrive this month

The Hub News Team | 2.7.19

Independent Retailer MonthBusinesses across the region are being urged to give our high streets a boost - by backing the Independent Retailer Month campaign.

The campaign runs annually throughout July to highlight the important role smaller, local, independent retailers play in the communities they serve, the local economy they contribute to, and in the retail sector as a whole.

Founded by Retail Expert Clare Rayner the campaign aims to help independent retailers and consumer-facing small businesses to get and stay open for business.

The group says research from the CLES (Centre for Local Economic Strategies) for the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) showed that for every £1 spent locally, around 50p-70p of that money recirculates back into the local economy.

But the same research also indicated that for the same £1 spent out of town or online, only 5p trickles back to the local community.

"If small business owners set an example by shopping for their supplies locally, their customers are bound to recognise their actions and follow suit. When people realise and appreciate the impact that their choice of where to spend can have, we believe that consumers will make more effort to spend with local independent businesses," a spokesman said.

To help consumers find independent shops near them the campaign has created a free, searchable directory of UK independent retailers, which also provides regular social media promotion for retailers with a Twitter account and is also open to online only retailers.
